Requirements for a Valid Marriage
It is a relatively simple process to get married in Massachusetts. There are, in general, three major requirements to get married. Please refer to our page on impediments to a valid marriage to learn what might make a marriage invalid.
1. Parties must file a notice of intention to marry with municipality of Massachusetts.
2. Municipality then issues a certification of intention to marry (marriage license)
3. Formal ceremony is held in which the parties exchange marital vows before a person authorized to solemnize the marriage. Authorized person then submits the final paperwork to original municipality.
